WVGSA/CBA Information

Fall CBA Information:

August 2018

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s):

The West Virginia Department of Education will administer the Classroom Benchmark Assessments (CBAs) in Fall 2018 in the areas of English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. This untimed test, which will be administered online, will serve as a baseline for determining academic progress for students and schools in West Virginia. Your child will take this assessment at South between October 1-3, 2018.

All public school students enrolled in Grades 3-8 will participate in the CBAs at the grade level in which they are enrolled, unless they meet the criteria for participation in the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment.

This year’s test will include three components:

* ELA Reading

* ELA Writing

* Mathematics

Student performance on the ELA reading and ELA writing components will be combined to obtain an overall ELA score.

The results from the CBA will provide information about a student’s academic strengths and areas that need improvement early in the school year. Teachers will be able to use this information to adjust their instruction throughout the year to address the needs of each individual student. Districts and schools will have the option of printing an Individual Student Report for each student to send to parents/guardians.

Additionally, the CBA is a component of the academic progress indicator in the state’s new accountability system outlined in WVBE Policy 2322. This indicator will allow the state to determine how much students improve from the fall CBA to the West Virginia General Summative Assessment administered in the spring.

I respectfully request that you encourage your child to perform to his/her best ability during the CBAs this fall so that we can get an accurate indicator of how much your child improves throughout the year.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact the principal or counselor at your child’s school or the district test coordinator at your district’s central office.
