Social Debate Club- Mr. Bragg

Purpose: A debate club of this sort at UHS would serve many important purposes. Firstly, it would allow students who are interested in debate or public speaking to enjoy those activities along with their peers. Additionally, the club should be an opportunity for individuals who want to become more informed about our chosen topics (or more specifically the student view point on these topics) to come and hear the students defend their points of view. Lastly, it would teach UHS students about the importance of avoiding closed-minded thinking and embracing the idea of reasoned disagreement. This is perhaps the most important function of the informal debate club. One of the biggest reasons we live in a divided world today is because nobody is willing to respectfully approach disagreements. If this club could do any single thing successfully, we would hope that it would show students that two people can have polarized opinions, and could share their thoughts with one another without damaging their mutual respect.
